I swear!

I swear, the more I knit, the more my yarn stash pile grows.  For every yard of yarn I knit up, two more yards appear in my yarn crates.  Does that ever happen to you?  My goal used to be to use up all my yarn but at this rate, I will never, ever be able to reach my much smaller goal of just making a visible dent in the pile.

Maybe I should give up my goals, become a full-on hoarder and just go yarn shopping.

As usual, that photo has bad lighting and does not do justice to the yarn.  That middle hat and coordinating fingerless gloves just may be my all time favorite knitted item.  Okay, favorite set.

So, since the last post, I'm up to 18 slip stitch hats completed, 3 pairs of fingerless gloves have been knit and one way-too-stiff hair scrunchy has been crocheted.  The hair scrunchy was super simple to make but I definitely need either thinner yarn or a much larger crochet hook.

I love how different these two hats look despite being knit with the same two yarns.

Something super exciting has happened here in our household.  Sarah, my daughter, has become a crafter.  She's chosen crochet over knitting which I'm dealing with.  I keep reminding myself that at least this way, she won't be stealing my knitting needles.  Sarah already has a yarn storage box and a project bag!  She started off making pumpkin coasters, graduated to cup cozies and is now crocheting herself a granny square sweater.  I'm just so excited that we can mother/daughter craft together,... Although, it is going to make the Montpelier Fiber Festival a lot more expensive this fall.

This cozy looks Much better on my travel cup/bottle that it was designed for but said cup is in the dishwasher so a plain water bottle is modeling it.

Another exciting thing is this pegboard room divider.  I bought it to use at craft shows and the hinges fold in either direction so it can be bent in all kinds of ways.  I'm super excited about it and plan to buy all kinds of pegboard accessories to put on it.  Meanwhile, it's taking up space in my very, very messy closet.

Oh, and one more exciting event - Hayden became an auto mechanic.  I love her choice of attire.  What else would a well dressed female mechanic wear to work besides a pink tutu and cowboy boots?

It might choke Artie

Any Little Rascals fans out there?

I'm head over heals with the color of these fingerless gloves.  They are knit with City Tweed DK in Artichoke.  And I cannot hear the word "artichoke" without thinking of Stymie's famous line, "It might choke Artie but it ain't gonna choke Stymie!"

Anyway, I'm loving that unusual green.  And the tweed.  What is it about tweed that screams Autumn to me?

And, shhh.... Last year that pumpkin was full of cotton balls so no one has thought to look in it this year.  This year, it contains Tootsie Rolls.  Sometimes you just have to hide your pre-Halloween candy in plain sight.

And because it's been a while...

Hayden looks so big until she goes out and stands beside Paw-Paw's truck.  Her giant neon green ball is casting a witchy glow onto the hubcap.  Apparently Hayden is going to be a soccer player.  She loves to kick her ball all over the yard.

So, my question for the day is, have any of you done TKGA's Master Knitter program?  I want to take/do the course/program but....  What I really want is to have already completed the program.  I can't quite bring myself to commit that much time and money into something YouTube and a heck of a lot of practice could provide me basically for free.  If you've completed the program, do you feel it was worth it?  What was your experience?  Did you complete the entire program or just a part of the whole?  I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Oops

 Oops!

Now, how on earth did I do that?  I used a row counter.  I used the same needles.  I knit them on consecutive days.

Oh, I know how I did that!

Good grief!

You know what I did?  I started off several repeats using the "0" on the row counter as a counted row.  Instead of telling the marker I was on row 1, I told it I was knitting row 0.  Doh!

Good thing I used a large skein.  I can simply recreate my error and knit a second pair of mismatched gloves that hopefully will match these.  Although it might be easier, simpliler and quicker to forget these and just start over.

If you are interested, the yarn is left over Colorburst I still had in the stash pile.

Three on Three - Fingerless Gloves

Remember me wanting to learn to walk and knit at the same time?  I thought I'd start out with some super simple fingerless gloves.  And because it's Thursday, here are three patterns I may try.

Simple Fingerless Gloves by Davina Choy

It doesn't get much simpler than those.  But because of the plainness of the design, the yarn will sing.  Whether I'm walking while I knit or laying in a hospital bed with two broken legs, I can't wait to knit several pair of these with a few different multicolored yarns that I have in the stash.

Half-finger Gloves by Snakefoot McGee

These half fingered gloves look pretty simple too, although it may shock you - I've never knit fingers before.  I can learn two things with this design!

Fadewalker Fingerless Mitts by Elizabeth Abate

And these, goodness!  These will be fantastic once I've gotten comfortable with walking and simple knitting.  And honestly, I love these so much, I may not wait until I can walk and knit to stitch myself a pair of these beauties.

Three on Thursday - Still only July?

Well, I'm still suffering from fall fever.  On top of wanting to wear jeans and flannel and sit around the fire pit sipping hot spiced tea, I'm also starting to crave candy corn.  I may not survive August at this point.

The fall fever may send me completely over the edge, but at least I can knit fall things while I wait for cooler weather.  Today's Three on Thursday is three mitten patterns.

Hand knit cabled fingerless gloves
Kindling Mitts by Helen Stewart
First of all, I love fingerless mitts.  Second of all, I Love cabled fingerless mitts.  And third, I LOVE the yarn used in that photo.  It just looks so soft and warm and I adore the tiny flecks of color.  These mitts are Kindling Mitts by Helen Stewart.  I've been on a Helen Stewart pattern kick lately.  I discovered her designs last month and Wow!  She's got so many wonderful designs.

Hand knit mittens with a floral fair isle design; free pattern
Mittens Nomen by Dela Hausmann
I'm fascinated by how different the pattern in these Nomen mittens looks depending on the colors used.  I'm also obsessed with the color scheme on the left.  Oh, and this pattern is free on Ravelry.

Hand knit women's mittens with elephants; fair isle knitting
Mittens that Never Forget by Elizabeth Lubowitz
I just love the elephants on these mittens.  Besides being adorable, they remind me of Hayden.  Her room is decorated with elephants.  I wonder if I knit a pair for her now, could I keep up with them until she was a teen and big enough to wear them?

Hope you'll join me over at Carole's for Three on Thursday.

Te Ara

I may be knitting a pair of Te Ara mitts,

but I'm certainly not getting a tiara for my efforts.

Te Ara Mitts

Things were going so well until that last row of cabling.

I'm not sure what to do about it.  It's three rows back.  Three rows is a lot of tinking.  I know, I know, there are only 52 stitches per row.  It's not That much tinking... but it sure feels like a lot.  But frogging those rows and trying to pick the cabled stitches back up seems scarier.

This mitt may end up in the time-out corner for a while.

bamboo cable needles in multiple sizes for all your knitted cable projects.
magnetic cable needles

It's only escape may be my fascination with my new cable needles.  I bought them because I liked the way they look.  They're bamboo with a metal section in the center.  I thought the metal was purely for decoration but it turns out, they stick to a magnet.  So, if you're using one of those magnetized chart keepers....

Magnetic or not, I love these new cable needles.  There's five of them in different sizes and the join between the bamboo and the metal is just course enough to hold the stitches well.  It's not so rough that it snags the stitches, but they don't accidentally slip off.  I wonder if that was planned.

As for project details, I am/was knitting the mitts with Knit Pick's Palette in Spruce and using a US2 needle.  I really like Spruce's bluey-greenness.

What's next?

I finished the Out of Winter shawl, and I'm almost finished with the Newborn Vertebrae and my Eclipse shawl.  Actually, Eclipse, as written, should have two more pattern repeats but I want it more scarf sized so I'm going to leave them off.  Plus, by leaving off those two repeats, I'll have enough yarn left for baby sweater.  Win/win!

Anyway...

Now the problem of what to knit next?  Obviously there will be a baby thing.  But I have a massive case of fall fever and want to knit fingerless mitts.  Plus, I got a new cable needle that I'm dying to use so....

So today's Three on Thursday is three pair of fingerless mitts I'm trying to choose between.

Yarn Chicken

I'm playing a mean game of yarn chicken.

fingerless gloves knit with leftover worsted weight yarn, OTN 081217
Playing yarn chicken

I'm knitting simple, fingerless gloves with some left over yarn I had.  I'm also praying I  have enough yarn.

I've also been reading Scarred by Joanne Macgregor.  I just finished it last night and absolutely loved it.  The book's Amazon description describes it as a young adult contemporary romance but I felt it was so much more than that.  While it did have the typical boy & girl are made for each other but have some silly issue keeping them apart romance theme, there was so much more to this story.  There was also misplaced guilt and forgiveness, self esteem issues, bullying, and school violence.  Wow.  I'm not making it sound like a great read, but it really was.  I had hard time putting it down and even skipped an after work visit to the local all night dinner with work friends to come home and read.  You Know I enjoyed it if I passed up food for it!

Makers' Monday - Bridal Gloves

Welcome to Makers' Monday, a celebration of knitting designers, artists and creatives.

In keeping with the wedding theme, I thought I'd share a few patterns for lacy bridal gloves. Now don't get me wrong, all of these gloves could be worn anytime or place, but knit with white yarn, they scream wedding.

crocheted wedding gloves designed by Nez Jewelry on Ravelry
Fingerless Crochet Lacy Wedding Gloves courtesy of Nez Jewelry

This first pair are actually crocheted. As much as I dislike crocheting (mostly because crochet gives me Horrible carpal tunnel issues not to mention, I'm rather talentless) these were just too pretty not to include.  So, for the folks who can crochet.... The Fingerless Crochet Lacy Wedding Gloves were designed by Nez Jewelry and can be found on Ravelry.

Or maybe you're planning a winter wedding.  I think these Filigree Mitts are stunning.

Filigree Mitts detail

Just look at the detail!  Another thing I really like about this design from Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer of Heartstrings Fiber Arts is that its Ravelry page offers a free link to the pattern's front page.  You are able to see gauge, needle & yarn requirements/recommendations before purchasing the pattern.  That's sweet!

Or perhaps your wedding is next weekend and you need something a little quicker to knit...

Lacy Hearts Wedding Gloves courtesy of Ellen Rich

How about these Lacy Hearts Wedding Gloves from Ellen Rich of Knitters' Haven?  These would be super cute for Valentines Day as well as for a wedding.

knitting pattern for beaded lacy gloves, bridal gloves
Eryn Lasgalen Glovelettes courtesy of Maria Hytti

And last but not least, how about this beaded design?  Not only is the pattern for these Eryn Lasgalen Glovelettes free, but the pattern's Ravelry page shows them knit up in several different colors. I just love how different the glovelettes look in different colors.  The red ones are edgy & remind me of my punk rock days, while the blue are delicate & of course, the white scream wedding.  Oops. I got so caught up remembering my punk rock youth, I almost forgot to mention the designer.  Eryn Lasgalen Glovelettes by Marie Hytti of Cozy Cabin Designs.

And I have to mention.... The whole time I've been typing this, I keep picturing the lacy hearts on socks. You know those brides on TV shows who wear their fancy wedding gown with their grubby Converse sneakers? Well, I've never seen a bride do that in real life, but if I ever do, I'm going to knit them lacy heart socks to wear with their Converse.

Knitting with Bison

Remember my part bison yarn?

Mock cabled fingerless gloves or mittens. https://www.etsy.com/shop/jeanniegrayknits
Fingerless Mitts

Like magic, it turned into a pair of fingerless mitts.

The yarn is Tracks Sport from The Buffalo Wool Co.  I received it in my November socks kit from KnitCrate.  The yarn is a merino & bison blend.  Right off the skein, it was a little stringy and had a slightly stiff cottony feel to it but after blocking, it softened right up.  It softened up enough that there's no longer a question about whether they are destined to be mine or my shop's.  They are definitely mine now.

Do you notice anything odd about the cabling?  They are worked from the fingertips downward and I was binge watching Vikings while I knit the first mitt.  Apparently I was paying more attention to Ragnar than the number of rows I was knitting.  The cables got further and further apart as I knit.  Ooops.  But no worries!  I just did the same thing on the second mitt and am calling it a design element.  I actually kind of like it.

Giving Thanks, Day 24

Gosh!  I'm on Day 24 & I haven't missed a single day yet.  That alone is something to be thankful for.  Maybe not for you, because really, besides me, who cares what I'm thankful for?  Probably no one.  Oh well, get over it.

So, besides being thankful that I've made it to Day 24 without missing a beat, what am I thankful for today?  Besides the fact that there's only another week of this thankful nonsense to go I mean, because that is something to be thankful for!  Anyway... what am I thankful for  today?  Well, it may be well past noon as I write this, but noon is still "early morning" to me.  I'm still on the 'sleep all morning, work all night' sleep schedule.  I can't seem to break it.  I may have to resort to setting the dreaded alarm clock.  Yikes!

Okay, refocus.....

Today... what am I thankful for?  Besides large doses of coffee?  Once again, I'm thankful for my daughter.  She may have gotten home from school (in my car) so late yesterday that I missed knitting group, but she did take it upon herself to hit grocery store after grocery store until she found pecans.  I have pecans now!  Thanksgiving has been saved and I'm oh, so thankful for my daughter's thoughtfulness and diligence.  And she doesn't even like pecan pie all that much!  Thanks, Sarah!

Meanwhile, in knitting world....

Faux Cabled Slouchy Hat

I finished another faux cabled hat.  The color is just gorgeous.  It's not really blue and it's not really green.  The yarn manufacturer calls it Fjord.  Which is actually a perfect name for it.  It's the exact color of the water in this picture of a fjord.

In case you're wondering, the definition of a fjord is "a long, narrow, deep inlet of the sea between high cliffs, as in Norway and Iceland."  The shirtless guy in the photo is just an added bonus of
stealing pictures from Google Images.

Currently, I'm knitting a pair of fingerless gloves to match the hat.  I didn't get much knitting done last night.  There was a lot of drama going on in my geared-towards-teens,-Netflix-soap-opera that forced me to do a lot more mindless cookie eating than knitting.  Hopefully tonight's knitting time will be more productive.

Giving Thanks for Friendship

Today, and every day, I'm thankful for my wonderful friends.  My crazy friends, my almost normal friends, my co-worker friends, the friends I see daily and the friends I only see once every 16 years, my knitting friends and my non-knitting friends.  Where would I be without you?  I don't even want to think about that!  I love you all!

But before this gets too mushy and you begin to wonder where the sarcasm has gone...

Two-toned fingerless gloves

Okay, so that's for one (or maybe 3 or 4) particular friend(s).

Anyway....  I love you all and am blessed to call each & every one of you a friend.

And, in case you were wondering, I finished the two-toned, faux cabled fingerless mitts.  They won't be showing up in my Etsy shop because the thumb hole on one is a row higher than the other.  Oops.  Not a big enough oops to bother fixing, but too big of an oops to sell.

So yeah, some lucky friend will be getting miss-matched, two-toned fingerless gloves for Christmas.  Aren't you glad we're friends?

Giving Thanks, Day 17

Today, I'm giving thanks for the beautiful fall weather we've been having.

And it's always knitting weather.

Fingerless Gloves

In an effort to use up a little of yarn I have left over from all the recent hat projects, I'm knitting a pair of two toned fingerless gloves.  The yarn is Patons Classic Wool and I'm knitting a mock cable pattern.  I love mock cable patterns.  Well, I love cable patterns in general, but I hate having to keep up with the cable needle.  You'd think keeping up with the needle would be easy considering 99% of the time, I'm parked in front of my computer & Netflix but.....

Giving Thanks - November 15th!

My entire family is giving thanks for November 15th finally arriving.

You see, growing up, my mom refused to turn the heat on until November 15th.  She said it was the law and as a young child, I honestly thought it was a law.  The heat didn't get turned on until November 15th and it got shut off for the season on April 15th.  It's just the way it was.  And as much as I hated freezing half to death for the few weeks leading up to November 15th, I've kept the tradition.  My family hates the tradition, but they do enjoy teasing me about it.  And luckily, they are pretty good sports about it and are happy, or at least willing, to wear coats and gloves in the house on those few super cold days we have prior to November 15th.

And since my family are such good sports about the Heat Law,

I knit a pair of fingerless gloves someone can wear on April 16th when it's still too cold to turn the heat off but I turn it off anyway.  Because really, it's the law!

Giving Thanks to the Yarn Gods

I'm giving thanks to the Yarn Gods today!  Remember I started these fingerless gloves the other day?

Fingerless Gloves

Well, I played a mean game of Chicken with the yarn.

The yarn's band said the skein weighed 50 grams.  I didn't weigh it before I began knitting, but when I'd finished the first glove, I had 26 grams of yarn left in the skein.  One gram more than exactly half.  Excellent.  Excellent as long as the skein had actually weighed 50 grams when I started.

And so, the game of Yarn Chicken began.  I got a little nervous doing the second glove's bind-off.

But in the end, the Yarn Gods blessed me with a spare 6.5 inches of yarn.  Thank you, thank you, thank you, Yarn Gods!

Giving Thanks Day 7, or let's just knit instead

Today's post has been written, deleted and re-written about 40 times already and will most likely, be deleted and re-written at least once more.

I'm conflicted and at a total loss for words.  Imagine that - me not rambling on for page after page after page of a "short" post.

The problem is, today I feel guilty for being thankful.  My mind is numb and all I can do or think is how eternally grateful I am to have my kids and to be able to hug them.  To be able to send them crazy, "I know I'm being a helicopter parent, but I love you and please be safe and please come home" text messages and have them actually respond.

You see, a friend and co-worker doesn't have that option any more.  Her two teenaged sons lost their lives in a tragic car accident on Thursday.

And just typing that leaves me speechless and in tears.

And guilty.  Guilty for being thankful that I still have my kids.  Guilty for even sharing the information.  Blog wise, should I mention it or pretend it didn't happen and my thoughts are not consumed by what she and her family are going through?  While I consider us friends, we weren't super close.  We didn't have the opportunity.  Our jobs had us working in different areas most of the time so we didn't get the chance to interact much, but we did spend plenty of nights chatting while ironing wet money.  (Yes, that's a thing.  Part of the job is ironing wet money.  Crazy, right?)  While we weren't close enough to have shared phone numbers (and I'm speaking in past tense because the season is over and the job feels like it's in the past,) my heart breaks for you.  You and your family are in, and will remain in, my thoughts and prayers.  And as a fellow parent.... I'm once again speechless, in tears and numb.

Meanwhile, since this is supposed to be a blog about knitting,

OTN, fingerless gloves

And once again, I'm conflicted.  Should I delete all that?  Again?  Should I just make up some dumb, meaningless thing to be thankful for today and simply show the OTN photo?  Probably.  But I won't because I want to give thanks for the things I'm truly thankful for.  Even if they make me feel a little bit guilty.

Giving Thanks, Day 1

Happy November, the month of giving thanks.  Along with everyone else in the free world, or at least the majority of American bloggers, I'll be posting something I'm thankful for each day during November.

Since today is the last day of my working season, I'll start the project off by being thankful for my wonderful supervisors and co-workers.  While I do love 'playing with the money' at work, the people are what make the job so much fun.  Without the fun people, the job would be a massive Hell hole.

Each year I've knit something small for our main supervisor & this year was no exception.

fingerless gloves, mittens, gloves, arm warmers available at https://www.etsy.com/shop/JeannieGrayKnits
Amber's Fingerless Gloves

Sorry, Amber.  I didn't crochet shark slippers.  Instead, you're getting fingerless gloves to keep your hands warm while you read & cuddle with your cat.  And, if you hate them, you can use them as rat sleeping bags.  I'm pretty sure I remember you saying you have pet rats as well as a cat.  That must be an interesting combination.  Anyway....  I hope you enjoy the gloves.  I've certainly enjoyed having you as a supervisor.  You've not only been a great boss, but you handled all those 4:00 a.m. crisises like a pro.  Congrats on a successful first season wearing the Supervisor shirt.

And then there's Jarrett.  Jarrett is one of those crazy co-workers who has, on more than one occasion, almost made me pee in my pants from laughing so hard.  I don't normally make anything for the co-workers, but I saw this hippo dish cloth and well....

dish cloth or wash cloth, gift idea
Hippo Dish Cloth

It's a silly gift and my version doesn't even look much like a hippo but when I saw the pattern, I couldn't resist.  There's a funny story behind the hippo thing, but I'm not going into details here.  For one thing, just thinking about it makes me laugh too hard to type plus, it's a little rude.  But, for the rest of my life, when ever I see a hippo, I will think of Jarrett.

So, thank you Amber & Jarrett and everyone else who has made this season such a fun success.  I will miss you all and hope to see each of you again in the spring.

Shades of Gray

Everything is gray around here.  It's been raining for three, maybe four days straight.  I feel like I'm starting to grow webbed feet.  And it's cold rain.  Last weekend was typical Virginia summer weather.  Actually, it felt more like a typical Virginia August than a Virginia May.  It was in the mid 90's, hazy blue skies & a gazillion percent humidity.  And then it thundered, the temperature dropped into the low 60's and the never ending rain began.

While I admit that I'm complaining about the rain (it is cold & raining on my day off so cut me some slack) I'm also enjoying it.  It's giving me a, maybe not "good" but good enough excuse not to spend my day off going to the grocery store.  It's also made things at work slow way down so I have gotten some knitting done.

Lately, my yarn choices seem to match the weather.  Gray.

I finished this simple rolled brim hat knit with Patons Kroy Socks in the Eclipse Stripes colorway and started a matching set of fingerless gloves.

fingerless gloves

The  fingerless gloves are progressing slowly because I started a more colorful & fun 'at home' project and I try not to take dpns to work.  The dpns, at least the wooden ones I prefer, tend to break in my backpack.  It's a long & complicated story, but the backpack gets treated fairly roughly & frequently gets smashed under super heavy stuff, thus, the dpn breakage.  Anyway, as much as I love the Eclipse colorway, these fingerless gloves are getting the unloved stepchild treatment.

City Tweed Hat

This was another simple rolled brim hat I knit at work.  This one is knit from Knit Picks' City Tweed in the Obsidian colorway.  It was the first time I've used this yarn, but it won't be the last.  The blend of alpaca & wool make the yarn incredibly soft while the tweed adds just enough color to keep me from going insane knitting solid gray on a gray, rainy day.

knit hat, https://www.etsy.com/shop/JeannieGrayKnits
Martha Stewart extra soft wool blend

And then there's the Martha hat.  I'd picked up this Martha Stewart yarn from a big box craft store recently.  I love the soft gray color, it was on sale & dirt cheap and feels as soft as it's name implies.    While I'm enjoying knitting with it & I like the fabric it creates, I'm not happy about the many, many bad places in the yarn.

extra soft wool blend, split yarn, broken yarn, Martha Stewart fail
Martha Stewart fail

See that little fuzz ball?  The yarn is full of places where parts of the yarn were broken & not spun properly.  I just pray it's bad yarn & not a moth issue.  I'd bought a ton of this yarn (like I said, it was on sale & dirt cheap) with the intention of knitting lots of things for my Etsy shop but I'd never offer my customers this poorly spun/cruddy yarn.

And on that note, I think I'll go find a blanket to snuggle under & some more colorful yarn to knit with.  Or maybe I'll just take a nap.  This is perfect napping weather.

A weekend in review

I learned something about myself over the weekend.  Apparently, I thrive on drama.  Let's review.

Moments before leaving the house to go to work on Saturday, I received a Facebook notice that a favorited band that used to play at most of my high school dances was having a reunion next month at a local bar & grille.  The notice had just been posted but already several friends had replied that they intended to go.  Now, understand that my high school was tiny.  Teeny tiny.  Actually, eentsie, weentsie tiny.  Tiny as in, there were 13 people in my graduating class.  So, getting four or five of us together at one time counts as a high school reunion.  I was psyched.  A high school reunion, a high school reunion that does not include a rubber chicken entree but does include a live band that will bring back so many fun memories.  Like I said, I was psyched.  And I went in to work all smiles & giggles & "Hey, how ya doing?" to everyone I passed.

I walked into work & discovered that all Hell was breaking loose.  Actually, that's probably a slightly exaggerated description but things were going wrong and some manual adjustments were being made that would cause some slight confusion and a bit more effort.  While the panic set in, I continued to tell myself that it would be fine.  We'd deal with it.  And we did.  But as days like that go, things continued to tank.  It was one of those Murphy's Law days that would leave even Murphy quaking in fear & confusion.  Everything that could possibly go wrong did.  And then things that couldn't possibly go wrong went wrong.  The theme park's slogan is about the customers having their 'best day ever' and occasionally when an employee is having a bad day, you'll hear them joking about it being their 'best day ever.'  Well, Saturday was so bad that almost every employee I encountered either asked me if I was having my best day ever or informed me that they were having their best day ever in that weird, giggly, a nervous breakdown is about to occur voice.  It was just one of those days.

And then I came home to one dog growling at the dining room door and the other dog doing her 'there's something wrong' bark rather than her 'Oh, goodie!  You're home!' bark.   My first thought was that a opossum or raccoon had gotten in through the dog door.  But no.  No such luck.

Big spider
After the day I'd had, I really should not have expected anything less.  It was a spider.  A spider so big, the dog was growling at it.  Normally, I kill bugs with Windex but this guy looked like he probably drank Windex for breakfast.  My solution was to put that 2-cup coffee cup over it (while the dog distracted it) and leave it for my dear sweet husband to deal with.  And if you're wondering, that's his sized 12 shoe.  Look how freaking big that spider is!  Holy Moly!

Somehow, I managed to get a little bit of sleep between dreams of monster spiders.  Sunday, I got up & did it all over again.  Things were still going wrong at work but I did at least have a working computer so it wasn't quite as dramatic as the previous day.  The biggest problem was the rain.

It didn't just rain.  It monsooned!  Actually, that's not correct either.  It rained so hard it made a monsoon look like a light mist.  And of course, my rain coat was a mile away in the car.  By the time I got to the car, even my underwear were wet.  And then I had to stop for gas and got even wetter if that's possible.  I was so wet the gas station gave me a free slice of pizza when I went in to pay.  Because of course their pay-at-the-pump thing was broken.

After a few scary hydroplaning episodes, I finally surfed my car home, stripped my soaking wet clothes off, put on some dry ones & fell into bed with soaking wet hair.  I woke up this morning looking like

Only curlier.

But the point of all that is.... all that drama was kind of fun.  Well, maybe not 'fun' but it was certainly exciting and made the work hours pass by quickly.  I never got any knitting done at work though.

But, I did finish a few WIP's (works in progress) in the mornings before work.  I already showed you these, but here are the Outlander fingerless gloves on a hand model and a hat I finished.

I really like that cable pattern.  "That" being both the faux cable on the hat and the cable on the fingerless gloves.  The gloves look much more complicated than they are, as long as you don't forget how to count to three.  It's surprising how many times I failed to correctly count to three.  I'm blaming it on the spider.

I finished a blue faux cabled hat as well.

And I dyed these fingerless gloves.  Actually, I dyed them late Friday night.  And that was a whole other bit of drama.  It was late, late Friday night when I was dying them and I'm blaming it on the hour.... but I stupidly stuck my hands into the dye bath without putting on gloves.  My hands instantly turned a nice bright magenta color.  And then I proceeded to get the dye on one side of my face as well.  So when I bounced into work on Saturday, not only was I grinning & saying "Hey, how ya doing?" to strangers, I was also a lovely shade of red that made me look like I had extreme blood pressure issues.  Like I said, Saturday was definitely a 'best day ever' said in the most sarcastic voice possible kind of day.

Anyway...  I was excited about the dye job though.  And it could have been worse.  I was using black dye so I could have ended up with gray hands instead of bright pink ones.

Anyway....  I turned this

And yes, it's sort of a mahogany reddish brown, not black.  Black is really made up of a whole lot of blue plus a little bit of red.  I'd been warned that black dye would most likely separate and I wouldn't end up with black fingerless gloves.  And I was cool with that.  I didn't really want black gloves.  I also didn't want those brown & white tweed gloves.  As you can see, the black dye did separate.  I have no idea where all the blue went but I ended up with reddish gloves and magenta hands.  I'm happy with the way the gloves turned out though and with all the drama & nervous sweating that went on on Saturday, by Sunday, my hands & face were back to their normal color.

And last but not least, I managed to knit a few more rounds on this slouchy hat.

And yes.  As you can see in the backgrounds of these photos, my desk is still the disaster zone it was last Monday.  In fact, it's even worse.  I have the feeling it will be November before I can call it truly organized and clean again.  It's just another bit of drama we'll have to learn to deal with.
